01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Kashiwaya Mitsusada’s semi-soft sweet “Ookini” comes in different colours, each with its own flavour: brown sugar, yuzu or plum. Made with surikohaku confection and decorated with seasonal nama-zatō, it has a smooth texture and gentle sweetness, visitors report. With its longer shelf life, “Ookini” can also make a suitable gift. The different colours and flavours invite comparison, and the sweets are appealing when you want something to enjoy a little at a time with tea.

Another seasonal highlight is Gyoja Mochi, sold for just one day during Yoiyama, the eve of the Gion Festival. This sweet combines white bean paste with Japanese pepper; one customer found its peppery flavour particularly memorable. If you are hoping to try this festival-season speciality, check the sale date before visiting. Hōragai Mochi, associated with Setsubun, is another sweet that marks the season. Some people find its Japanese pepper milder and more approachable than in Gyoja Mochi, offering a different way to enjoy the spice’s aroma.

This wagashi shop offers a selection of dried sweets at the counter, alongside seasonal treats worth seeking out. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Sundays. Payment is cash only.
